Creattura Shows at APRSAF-32 How Rice Water Management Can Be Truly Verified from Space and Calls for Faster Adoption

Multi-satellite monitoring enables meter-scale,near-daily observation of paddy water, overcoming a key barrier to scalingdigital MRV for rice methane reduction.

Creattura Co., Ltd. demonstrated at APRSAF-32 (the 32nd Asia-Pacific Regional SpaceAgency Forum) in Bangkok that rice paddy water conditions can now be monitoredfrom space at meter-scale resolution and near-daily frequency, enabling morereliable verification of Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD).
By combining five satellite sources with hydrological dataand extensive ground-truth observations, Creattura achieves a usableobservation every 1.6 days on average, capturing short drainage events thatSAR-only monitoring can miss. Critically, the ground-truth dataset enables theapproach to be localized to different regions and independently validated, making satellite MRV more scalable and credible for carbon markets.
The approach underpins LynxAWD, Creattura’s digital MRVplatform, which supports approximately 23,000 hectares of AWD projects acrossthe Philippines, while spanning to pilots in Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, andBangladesh as of the 2026 wet season.
“The science and the technology are ready. What we need next isfor policymakers and standard-setters across compliance and voluntary markets, including the JCM, Verra and Gold Standard, to adopt these approaches quickly. The faster they are adopted, the faster activities like AWD can scale, and thatbenefits both farming communities and the climate.”
Dr. Alexis Declaro, Head of Data Science& GIS, Creattura Co., Ltd.
Creattura is calling on policymakers, carbon standards andmethodology developers, including the JCM, Verra and Gold Standard, toaccelerate the assessment and adoption of multi-sensor, satellite-basedapproaches to AWD monitoring.
